OUR FIRE INTERVENTION REHABILITATION

& EVALUATION PROGRAM

HISTORY OF OUR FIRESETTING PROGRAM: WCA Psychology Department is part of the larger WCA Hospital organization, which includes many mental health services and initiatives such as outpatient mental health, an inpatient child/adolescent mental health unit, and a substance treatment program for youths.

The Psychology Department is involved with many juvenile safety initiatives (e.g., threats to schools, sexual offenses and firesetting) throughout Chautauqua County and the associated areas. We observed over the past 5 years an increase in parent reports of firesetting and noted a need for more specialized assessment and treatment services. The years of programming that followed included more in-depth training and education about juvenile firesetters. It also required a broader collaboration with other agencies (e.g., schools, mental health providers, physicians, fire fighters and law enforcement) to assist these youths and their families. These efforts eventually lead to a commitment to obtain the necessary and specialized tools for the assessment and treatment of the various types of juvenile firesetters.

We are grateful to the granting agencies of F.E.M.A. U.S.F.A. and Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for their monetary supports. The present WCAHEAT.COM web site is a product of these grants.
